HeartMath
HeartMath is a system of science-based techniques and technologies that are designed to improve emotional wellbeing by synchronising the mind, heart and body. HeartMath helps people to build resilience, reduce stress, and enhance mental clarity through practices that promote “heart coherence”. The effectiveness of HeartMath has been scientifically proven by 30+ years of research and 500+ peer-reviewed and independent studies.
The Heart-Brain Connection
Traditionally, it’s believed that the heart responds to signals from the brain. However, research indicates that the heart sends more signals to the brain than vice versa. These heart signals significantly influence brain functions, affecting emotional processing and cognitive abilities like attention, perception, memory and problem-solving.
Different patterns of heart activity, associated with various emotional states, have distinct effects on brain function. Stress and negative emotions lead to erratic heart rhythms, which can inhibit higher brain functions, making it harder to think clearly and make decisions. Conversely, positive emotions produce stable heart rhythms, enhancing brain function and emotional stability.
Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
A healthy heart doesn’t beat at a constant rate; instead, there’s natural variability between beats, which is known as Heart Rate Variability. HRV reflects the dynamic interplay between the sympathetic (stimulating) and parasympathetic (soothing) branches of the autonomic nervous system.
Heart Coherence
Emotions have a significant effect on our heart rhythms. Negative emotions like anger and frustration result in erratic, incoherent heart rhythms. This indicates an imbalanced or dysregulated nervous system, which can lead to stress and inefficient bodily functions.
In contrast, positive emotions such as love and appreciation produce smooth, coherent heart rhythms. This indicates a balanced or regulated nervous system, which enhances cognitive performance, emotional stability and efficient bodily functions.
Heart Coherence Isn’t Just Relaxation
Heart coherence and relaxation both affect the nervous system, but they are distinct states. Relaxation is characterised by a calm nervous system and lower heart rate variability. Heart coherence brings harmony to the nervous system and physiological processes without necessarily reducing heart rate variability. So, heart coherence is an active, engaged state that helps us to function well, whereas relaxation is a more passive state.
Heart Breathing
Our breathing patterns can significantly influence our heart rhythms. Rhythmic breathing, such as repeatedly breathing in for 5 seconds then out for 5 seconds, increases heart coherence. HeartMath Heart Breathing builds on this by feeling a positive emotion, such as love, joy or appreciation, as we breath rhythmically. This combination of rhythmic breathing plus a positive emotion allows practitioners to naturally enter a coherent state. With regular practice, heart coherence gradually becomes our body’s natural state, which enhances our overall wellbeing.
