Raise Your Level of Consciousness with IFS

Raise Your Level of Consciousness with IFS

Consciousness isn’t a single state – it exists on a spectrum. The lower frequencies of consciousness are characterised by contraction, separation and survival-based emotions. The higher frequencies are characterised by connection, compassion and unity.

IFS and Level of Consciousness

The diagram illustrates this spectrum, and shows how different emotional states correspond to different frequencies or levels of consciousness:

Exiles: The heavy, low energy emotions (shame, guilt, despair, grief and fear) are all associated with what IFS calls “exiles” – unpleasant emotions and feelings that we generally try to suppress or avoid.

Firefighters: The higher energy emotions (anxiety, desire, anger and pride) are primarily associated with what IFS calls “firefighters” emotional/reactive parts that are our second line of defence, when “managers” fail. But these emotions also affect our mind and our manager parts, especially our inner critic.

Managers: The transitional / mental frequencies (optimism, acceptance and reason) are primarily associated with what IFS calls “managers”. They are our first line of defence against exiles being triggered. They are more reasonable and socially acceptable than firefighters. As previously mentioned, managers can be affected by emotions, but they are primarily born from the mind (optimism, acceptance and reason).

Self/Soul: The highest frequencies of human consciousness (wisdom, love, joy, peace and unity) reflect the expanded states of awareness that are associated with our soul or true-Self.

The Connection Between Parts and Your Level of Consciousness

These various levels of consciousness have measurable effects on our physiology, perception, relationships and capacity to handle life’s challenges. When we’re operating from shame (20), our nervous system is in collapse, so the world appears hostile and hopeless. But when we’re operating from love (500), our heart is open, positive and compassionate towards ourself and others.

The insight that oour parts operate at different frequencies of consciousness is why Internal Family Systems therapy is such a powerful approach to personal and transpersonal growth:

  • When an exiled part carrying shame (20) is activated, we drop into that frequency of consciousness, so our perception narrows, our body contracts, and we lose access to our higher cognitive capacities. This isn’t a personal weakness or failure – it’s simply what happens when a wounded part is in the driving seat.
  • When a protective part (firefighter or manager) rooted in anger (150) takes over, we shift into that frequency of consciousness. We might feel more energised than shame, but we’re still in a contracted state, and seeing other people as threats to triggering our exiles.
  • When we’re in Self – our soul’s essence – we naturally operate at the higher frequencies of consciousness. Self embodies the qualities of calm, compassion, inner strength, wisdom and unity, and can express love, joy and creativity.

This is why IFS therapy and the development of consciousness evolution are so interconnected. Unblending from our parts give us more access to Self, so IFS therapy literally raises our level of consciousness. And by healing our wounded parts and helping our protective parts to relax, IFS gradually removes the triggers that keep pulling us back down to the lower frequencies.

The Lower Emotional Frequencies

The Low-Energy Emotions of Exiles (20-100)

Look at the bottom section of the consciousness spectrum: shame, guilt, despair, grief, fear and anxiety. These emotions have frequencies between 20 and 100 – what we might call the survival zone – and it’s where most of our exiled parts live.

  • Shame (20) is the lowest frequency of consciousness, characterised by feelings of worthlessness, humiliation and the desire to disappear. Exiled parts carrying shame often formed in childhood when we experienced rejection, abuse or profound mis-attunement. When these parts are activated, our entire system collapses into this low frequency.
  • Guilt (30) involves self-blame and the belief that we’ve done something unforgivable. Parts that carry guilt are often stuck in moments when we feel we failed, hurt someone or violated our own values.
  • Despair & Apathy (50) represent a state of hopelessness and powerlessness. These exiled parts have given up, and they see no possibility for change or relief.
  • Sadness & Grief (75) are natural responses to loss, but when parts become stuck in grief and unable to move through it, our consciousness remains contracted around the loss.
  • Fear (100) keep us in a state of constant hypervigilance and threat. Whilst fear is useful in genuinely dangerous situations, exiled parts often carry disproportionate fear and anxiety from old wounds, distress and trauma.

Firefighters & Managers Protect Us From Exiled Emotions

Managers are usually our first line of defence (against exile activation), but when they fail, our firefighters spring into action to protect us from being emotionally overwhelmed by our exiles. Addictive behaviours, compulsive eating, dissociation, rage and self-harm are all attempts to numb or discharge the unbearable feelings that are carried by our exiles.

  • Desire & Craving (125) involve constant wanting, and the belief that satisfaction lies outside ourself. Both Managers and Firefighters operate at this frequency drive us in a desperate attempt to finally feel okay.
  • Anger (150) is quite energetic, so it feels empowering compared to the low-energy, low-frequency emotions carried by our exiles. So, it’s preferable to feel anger (150) at someone else than it is to feel the shame (20) that’s exiled deep inside ourself.
  • Resentment (150) of self or others is a common strategy used by our inner critic (a manager part) to divert attention outwards onto someone else, and away from the painful emotions that are within our exiles.
  • Egoic Pride (175) is the frequency of superiority and comparison. Manager parts operating at this level try to protect us from feeling shame or guilt by feeling “good” about ourself, better than others, achieving more or proving our worth. Whilst this feels better than shame, it’s still rooted in separation and the need to defend against the feeling of unworthiness.

The Role of Managers

Manager parts aren’t trying to harm you – they’re trying to keep you functioning and prevent you from dropping into the lower frequencies where your exiles live. The perfectionist manager pushes you to achieve because it fears the shame of failure. The controlling manager orchestrates your life because it fears the vulnerability of uncertainty.

The challenge is that whilst managers provide stability and prevent you from collapsing into shame or despair, they also prevent you from rising into the higher frequencies. They keep you in a state of doing, controlling, and defending rather than being, allowing, and opening. This is why many high-achievers, despite external success, feel empty or disconnected. Their manager parts have successfully kept them out of the lower frequencies, but at the cost of also blocking access to love, joy, and peace.

The Courage Threshold: Where Transformation Begins

Courage (200) marks a crucial threshold, where consciousness shifts from emotion to mind, from contraction to expansion, from survival to growth. Courage is the frequency at which we begin to face our inner world rather than fleeing from it or defending against it. This is the consciousness required to engage meaningfully with Internal Family Systems therapy. True healing through IFS requires courage to:

  • Turn towards parts that you’ve been avoiding.
  • Feel emotions that you’ve been numbing.
  • Witness pain that you’ve been denying.
  • Challenge beliefs that you’ve been protecting.
  • Sit with uncertainty, discomfort and vulnerability.
  • Trust your process when outcomes aren’t guaranteed.

When you find the courage to engage with your parts – particularly your exiles – you cross a threshold in consciousness. You move from being run by your protective system to beginning to lead it (from Self). You shift from avoiding your inner world to exploring it with curiosity. This is why some people can be in therapy for years without any significant heling or transformation. If they haven’t crossed the courage threshold – if they’re still operating primarily from emotional consciousness and trying to avoid pain – they can’t access the elevated consciousness that’s required for deep healing.

The Middle Frequencies of Mind

Where Clarity Begins to Emerge

As you move into the 300-400 range, you enter what the diagram identifies as “mind” frequencies. This is where mental clarity begins to emerge more consistently, because the emotional thinking of the lower frequencies has been somewhat transcended.

  • Optimism (310) represents a hopeful, forward-looking state where possibilities open up. When you relate to your parts with optimism, you trust that healing is possible and that your parts can transform.
  • Acceptance (350) is a profound shift in consciousness. Rather than resisting what is, you can be with your experience without needing to change it immediately. In IFS terms, this is the capacity to be present with a part’s pain without being overwhelmed or trying to make it go away. Acceptance creates the space for healing.
  • Reason (400) brings clarity, discernment and the ability to see old patterns and make new meaning. From this level of consciousness, you can understand the logic of your internal system – why parts developed, what they’re protecting, and how they relate to each other. This cognitive clarity supports the healing process.

The Emergence of Self-Leadership

What’s happening at this level of consciousness (300-400) is that Self is beginning to lead your internal system more consistently. You’re not completely identified with any single part. You can hold multiple perspectives. You can be with difficult emotions without being consumed by them. This is the consciousness from which genuine IFS work becomes possible. When you can access acceptance and reason whilst also staying connected to your felt experience, you can:

  • Unblend from activated parts.
  • Get to know your parts with curiosity rather than judgement.
  • Witness your exiles’ pain with compassion.
  • Negotiate with protective parts.
  • Facilitate healing and unburdening.

Many people experience this range as their “baseline” consciousness after doing significant parts work. They’re not always in blissful states, but they have much more access to Self and can recover from part activation more quickly.

The Self or Soul Frequencies

Accessing Higher Consciousness (440-540)

As we move up into the higher levels of consciousness – wisdom (440), love (500) and joy (540) – we enter what the diagram calls “soul” frequencies:

  • Wisdom (440) transcends mere reason. It’s an embodied knowing that arises from Self. When you operate from wisdom, you can hold paradox, embrace complexity, and access deep insight about yourself and others. Your parts trust your leadership because they feel the groundedness and truth of wisdom.
  • Love (500) is unconditional, non-possessive, and radiates outward naturally. This isn’t the needy, dependent love of parts seeking to fill emptiness. It’s the love that flows from Self – love for your parts, love for yourself, love for others, love for life itself. At this frequency, your heart is open and you naturally extend compassion.
  • Joy (540) arises not from external circumstances but from the simple fact of being alive and present. When exiles are healed and protectors can relax, when you’re living from Self more consistently, joy bubbles up spontaneously. Not happiness dependent on things going well, but an inner radiance that’s always available.

At this level of consciousness (440-540) we have a lot more access to our Self or soul. It is characterised by what IFS calls the “8 Cs of Self”: compassion, curiosity, clarity, calm, confidence, courage, creativity and connectedness. At least some of these qualities must be present to demonstrate that we are ready for deep inner work. Because without these qualities, our protector parts (managers and firefighters) won’t trust us enough to grant us access to the exiled parts that we want to heal and reintegrate.

How IFS Facilitates Access to Self / Soul Consciousness

Internal Family Systems therapy provides a practical pathway to these elevated states of consciousness. You’re not trying to force yourself to “think more positively” or “just choose love.” Instead, you’re:

  • Healing the exiled parts whose pain contracts your consciousness.
  • Helping protective parts release their extreme roles.
  • Removing the obstacles to your natural Self qualities.
  • Allowing the wisdom, love, and joy that are your essence to emerge.

When a part that’s been carrying shame for decades finally unburdens, you’ll probably experience a spontaneous shift in consciousness – the heaviness lifts, your chest opens, and love and compassion flow more freely. This isn’t something you’re doing – it’s what naturally happens when obstacles are removed.

Similarly, when a controlling manager part finally trusts you enough to step back, you might suddenly access wisdom about a situation that was previously hidden. The part’s narrow perspective was blocking your wider consciousness. This is why IFS therapy and raising your level of consciousness are inseparable. Working with your parts directly shifts your level of consciousness – both in the moment and over time as your baseline frequency rises.

Peace and Presence (600)

At 600, we encounter peace – a state of profound stillness, presence and transcendence of duality. This is consciousness resting in pure being, beyond the mind’s constructs and the parts’ dramas. In IFS terms, this is pure Self – not Self relating to parts, but Self simply being.

When all of your parts trust you completely and can relax into the background, what remains is this peaceful presence. It’s always been there, but obscured by the noise of parts jockeying for position, protecting against threats, and carrying old pain.
Many people touch this state briefly during meditation, in nature, or in moments of deep inner work, when parts spontaneously step back to allow you to experience your essence directly. It’s characterised by:

  • Complete presence (embodied awareness) in the now.
  • Freedom from mental commentary.
  • A sense of fullness, wholeness and completeness.
  • Deep restfulness, even during activity.
  • A connection to something greater than your individual self.

Unity Consciousness (700+)

At the highest frequencies, consciousness recognises itself as one with all of existence. The illusion of separation dissolves and non-duality becomes embodied. You experience yourself as a unique expression of universal consciousness – which is precisely what the Unique Self and other spiritual teachings points towards.

Such experiences may be rare and fleeting, but IFS creates conditions that can facilitate them. When your parts are healed and harmonised, when Self leads your system with love and wisdom, you may spontaneously experience:

  • A sense of oneness with all existence.
  • The realisation that your consciousness and universal consciousness are one.
  • The sense that your unique perspective is how the universe knows itself.
  • Dissolution of the boundary between self and other (nonduality).
  • Profound peace, love and freedom.

This isn’t the goal of IFS therapy in the conventional sense. You’re not doing parts work primarily to attain enlightenment, but a higher level of consciousness is a natural consequence of healing and Self-leadership.
